NoDa Brewing Company Wins Prestigious Brewing Honor in Experimental IPA Category

NoDa Brewing Company won a bronze medal at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the nation’s largest commercial beer competition and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States.

NoDa Brewing Company was recognized in the experimental IPA beer-style category for its Big SLURP, a juicy imperial IPA that uses this unique flavor concept from hops in the mash as the foundation of an amazing citrus hop ride. Big SLURP is hopped with Galaxy, Cascade, Ekuanot, and Centennial hops and is infused with tangerine and orange zest. NoDa Brewing Company is a 60-barrel brewery located in Charlotte, North Carolina that prides itself in serving great beer across the Carolinas.

“Big SLURP is the first large-scale entry of our SLURP series which features new brewing techniques and products to emphasize unique flavors, such as Thiol, and capitalize on fruity flavor components while being more efficient and more repeatable in production," said Chad Henderson, head brewer at NoDa Brewing Company. "Having a successful brand is amazing by itself, but winning a GABF medal takes it to a new level. Especially considering that it won in a category that is essentially deemed as an innovation IPA category. I do believe we are one of, if not the first, thiol expressive IPAs to enter in this category and it makes me so excited to see where the brand will go in the future!”

The top three winners in the competition’s 98 beer categories covering 177 different beer styles were announced on October 8 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

The 2022 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 235 expert judges from 9,904 entries, plus 94 Collaboration and 35 Pro-Am entries, received from 2,154 U.S. breweries.

“Each year the Great American Beer Festival showcases the best that American brewers have to offer,” said Chris Williams, competition director, Great American Beer Festival. “With more than 9,900 entries, this year’s competition was the most competitive to date. Congratulations to all the winners who truly demonstrated why the U.S. is the best brewing nation in the world.”
