  • Grain to Glass Series: Cellar | NoDa Brewing Company

< Previous Next > Grain to Glass Series: Cellar September 27, 2017 If you haven’t read the first five posts in this series, hop back to “ Grain to Glass Series Introduction ,” “ Grain to Glass Series: Packaging ,” “ Grain to Glass Series: Tap Room ,” “Grain to Glass Series: Lab ” and Grain to Glass Series: Brewing ,” and THEN come here! If you watched our last video on brewing , you might think that the beer goes straight from that process into our kegs and cans… BUT WAIT, there’s more! This week’s video focuses on the work that happens in the cellar after the brewing’s begun and before the kegging/canning starts. While there are many elements to the work that occurs in the cellar, our Head Brewer/Co-Owner, Chad Henderson, will be covering two of the main functions: the CIP system and the centrifuge. Wondering what that means? Don’t worry, Chad has you covered in the video below! Each and every aspect, or “grain to glass,” if you will, of the brewery is incredibly important to a quality product and experience, but the cellar plays an vital role in fine-tuning our beer. You have the processes that take place in this section of the brewery to thank for clean, consistent and polished beer. So, the next time you sip on a NoDa beer (maybe while you’re watching this video?), say a little thank you to our cellarman for bringing together such deliciously refined brews!

  • Cheerwine and NoDa Brewing Company Introduce Cheerwine Ale | NoDa Brewing Company

< Previous Next > Cheerwine and NoDa Brewing Company Introduce Cheerwine Ale February 13, 2023 SALISBURY, N.C. ( February 13, 2023 ) – Two of North Carolina’s most popular family-owned beverage companies are giving Carolinians something to ‘cheer’ about when Cheerwine Ale hits retailers’ shelves today. Cheerwine , the iconic 106-year-old cherry soda from Salisbury, N.C., and popular Charlotte-based brewery NoDa Brewing Company ’s Cheerwine Ale (5.2% ABV | 18 IBUs), is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale infused with the South’s favorite cherry soda. “Cheerwine makes the perfect ingredient in food and beverages because its unique cherry flavor complements so many different tastes,” says Joy Ritchie Harper, vice-president of marketing for Cheerwine and fifth-generation founding family member. “For years, people have incorporated Cheerwine into barbecue sauces, cocktails, desserts and more, and now we’re adding beer to that list.” Cheerwine Ale, which is great for craft beer novices and experts alike, is a smooth-drinking, well-balanced brew with a perfect amount of Cheerwine that doesn’t overpower the beer’s flavor. Cheerwine Ale will be part of NoDa Brewing Company’s year-round lineup. “Cheerwine and NoDa are synonymous with North Carolina, and both our fan bases have fond memories of enjoying our beverages during their most cheerful times - from summer vacations to the holidays and all points in between,” says Jacob Virgil, director of strategic development for NoDa Brewing Company. “Similarly, Cheerwine Ale can be enjoyed year round - it’s an approachable craft beer perfect for all occasions. We’re excited to bring fans the perfect marriage of these two North Carolina staples. ” “Like Cheerwine, NoDa is an iconic Carolina original. As one of Charlotte’s first craft breweries, it’s a classic brand led by passionate people and the perfect partner to produce a Cheerwine-infused beer,” says Harper. Cheerwine Ale, which comes in 16 oz. four-pack cans, is now available at select North Carolina retailers. It’s also available on draft at a number of Charlotte and Triangle restaurants and bars, as well as the brewery’s Charlotte and Chapel Hill taprooms. • Grain to Glass Series: Introduction | NoDa Brewing Company

< Previous Next > Grain to Glass Series: Introduction July 15, 2017 We’re thrilled to introduce to you our new Grain to Glass Video Series! The first video in the series focuses on our sales and self-distribution, and in the coming months, we’ll release the other videos. Self-distribution, a choice we’ve made for our brewery, is very important to us. From the day we opened in 2011, it’s been a major pillar in our operations for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it alleviates the need for a middle man. There’s no need for someone else to get involved when our customers can come straight to the source. Since it’s our product, we know the ins-and-outs, we can deliver fresh beer quickly, and we can do all of this at a lower cost without bringing in a third party. The second reason we choose to self-distribute, which is closely tied to the first, is because of the local jobs it allows us to create. Right now we have 14 employees that handle everything from on- and off-premises sales, delivery, and merchandising, and this number of employees will only increase as our business continues to grow. While we’ve found much success in our self-distribution method, we’re now being forced to slow down our growth because of a NC law that only allows us to produce and self-distribute up to 25,000 barrels of beer per year. If we exceeded that 25,000 barrels, we would be forced to hand our sales and distribution over to a third-party wholesaler. Being punished for our brewery’s success is especially frustrating when we’re already battling to even make a tiny dent in the beer consumed compared to The Big Guys, like AB InBev whose annual sales exceed $55 billion. Specifically, in NC, the beer industry contributed $8.8 billion to the economy, but only $1.2 billion of that comes from craft beer. Living and working in the 9th most populous state in the US could provide a monumental opportunity for craft to grow, but until the regulations are lifted, those of us who want the right to make choices for our breweries will continue to be punished for our growth.

  • Grain to Glass Series: Lab | NoDa Brewing Company

< Previous Next > Grain to Glass Series: Lab August 25, 2017 If you haven’t read the first three posts in this series, hop back to “ Grain to Glass Series Introduction ,” “ Grain to Glass Series: Packaging ” and “ Grain to Glass Series: Tap Room ,” and then come here! While you might think that we just drink beer around here (and we definitely do plenty of that), the entire brewing process is actually a science, which is why the laboratory is such a vital piece of our brewery puzzle. While we could attempt some scientific explanations, we’ll just let you follow our Mad Scientist, Brian Schonder, around while Anthony Proctor (The Yeast Wrangler) and Chad Henderson (Co-Owner/Head Brewer) explain! Just a few definitions you might find helpful… Wort – The sweet, malty liquid that begins by converting starches in malted grains into sugar (the process of mashing). Hot water is added to the mash to allow the enzymes to finish the conversion from starch to sugar VDK – Vicinal Diketones are a group of flavor components in beer that are formed during fermentation and can indicate possible bacterial contamination. Off flavors – The slight, mostly unintentional, undesirable or out-of-place flavors that can occur due to the ingredients, changes in fermentation or even brewing equipment (just to name a few). Diacetyl – Diacetyl is an organic compound with the chemical formula (CH₃CO)₂. It is a yellow/green liquid with an intensely buttery flavor. It is a vicinal diketone with the molecular formula C₄H₆O₂. Esters – A fruity flavor produced during fermentation that can vary in taste and aroma between pears, roses, bananas or other light fruits. In very high concentration it can create a solvent-like flavor. Esters are formed in beer by the “esterification” of ethanol which is the primary alcohol in beer. Gravity – The specific gravity, or relative density compared to water, of the wort at various stages in the fermentation.
